Recently we lost another player from my childhood, former San Diego Padres ace Randy Jones. Jones had a very short peak but what a peak it was!
Coming off a 22 loss season in 1974, Jones won 20 games and led the league with a 2.24 ERA. What a crazy season out of nowhere for the 25 year old southpaw. He would follow that with a Cy Young win in 1976 going 22-14 with a 2.74 ERA.
Unfortunately for Jones, he would never have a winning record again and injuries would end his career at age 32. But who can forget that hair? It's why I chose the 1977 Topps card to remember him by. I remember the hair.
By now, we've all forgotten those two years with the Mets. Going a combined 8-18 with an ERA of 4.69 is something we kind of want to forget. Does anyone remember him going to spring training with the Pirates in 1983? I do not. He was released on March 27th and that was the end of his career.
Rest in Peace Randy Jones, you are missed!
