Rest In Peace Billy Hunter

ree

I was a huge baseball fan almost from birth. Pre-internet, it was tough to follow the game the way you can today but I did my best. When I got to college, I followed the Towson State baseball team pretty closely my freshman year. What I really didn't grasp was, the Athletic Director was a former major leaguer. I never met him but looking back, I should have.

We lost Billy Hunter in 2025 at age 97. Having had a six year career with four different teams, Hunter didn't set the major leagues on fire but six years in the big leagues is nothing to sneeze at. He was the last living member of the St Louis Browns, who would move to Baltimore in 1954.

Later on he would manage the Texas Rangers for two years before arriving in Towson, first as manager, then as Athletic Director. In 1988, the Towson Tigers went on to the ECC Tournament which was quite impressive for a smaller school. They even won a game in the tournament!

It was definitely a mistake on my part not meeting him during my time at Towson and I regret that. And for that reason, he is a Baseball Card Memory. Rest in Peace, Billy!
