With the 52nd pick in the 1968 Major League Baseball Expansion Draft, the Seattle Pilots selected left handed pitcher John Morris from the Baltimore Orioles organization. Coming off a solid 1968 campaign where he was 2-0 with a 2.56 ERA, the Pilots though they picked a solid reliever.
Morris would be decent for three years in Seattle & Milwaukee and then spend parts of three seasons in San Francisco with the Giants. The reason we are talking about John Morris is he is another player who passed away in 2025. We continue to remember those players we lost this past year.
I don't know much about him as he played a bulk of his career in my very young years. I first noticed him when I was trying to collect every Topps Milwaukee Brewers' card. I remembered former St Louis Cardinals outfielder John Morris, but didn't know about the Brewers' pitcher.
Morris spent parts of eight years in the big leagues with four different teams. He had originally come up with the Phillies in 1966, only to be traded to Baltimore after the season. His final season, 1974, he carried a respectable 3.05 ERA and a great WHIP of 1.01. But he failed to make the Giants roster in 1975 and was released before the beginning of the season, and that would be it.
Rest in Peace John Morris, I will always remember you for your 1971 Topps baseball card, which makes you a Baseball Card Memory!
