Rest In Peace Rich Dauer

ree

We have lost so many former major leaguers in 2025 but one of them that I missed was former Baltimore Orioles starting second baseman Rich Dauer.

Dauer started for the Orioles for eight seasons from 1977 to 1984, which is a pretty impressive number. He had little power and never hit for a high average, His solid glove kept him in the lineup despite Lenny Sakata breathing down his neck.

In 1985, the Orioles decided to go with Alan Wiggins at second base and kept Dauer as a utility player. He played much less that year and was not offered a contract for 1986. After his release, he chose not to continue his playing career.

I don't remember much about Dauer aside from him doing his job everyday and being part of the 1983 World Series Champion Orioles that beat my Phillies. Still, it feels like I lost a player I knew well as I would get his baseball cards in packs for 10 years. And for that reason, he will always be a Baseball Card Memory!
